About Tunisia

Why 100% Tunisian Olive Oil

Tunisia is a gem of the southern Mediterranean and North Africa. Because of its perfect blending of mild temperatures, fertile soil and unique growing conditions, the resulting olive crop and its oil also present distinctive attributes. Although nearly 40% of Tunisia is Sahara Desert, the remaining northern region is a renowned agricultural region with several distinct growing regions.

Known for its distinctive fruity aroma and sweet taste, 100% Tunisian olive oil has long been sought after to blend with other oils to reduce ‘bite’ and create a rounder, sweeter flavor. With demand growing for higher quality olive oils at retail, Tunisia is now making a larger percentage of its exclusive crop available to the world’s most discriminating palates in bottles for use at the table and in cooking.

ONH (l’Office National de l’Huile) is the official Tunisian Olive Oil office and sets the stringent quality and export standards that have helped Tunisia gain its prominence among the world’s olive oil community. By carefully controlling acidity and ensuring proper extraction and storage techniques, 100% Tunisian olive oil has set the standard for a true, premium, extra virgin olive oil.

Weak standards set by many export and control authorities have brought the quality of some olive oils into question, with some oils labeled ‘Extra Virgin’ no more than processed oils which seriously compromise the health benefits and flavor inherent in a quality olive oil.

Buy 100% Tunisian Olive Oil with confidence. It’s your guarantee of the pinnacle of quality, flavor and health benefits.

History

Olive cultivation in Tunisia dates back to the 8th century BC—even before the establishment of famous city of Carthage on the southern Mediterranean shores. The Phoenicians were the first to introduce this crop to North Africa, and the olive tree has been cultivated by the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Carthaginians, and the Romans in a time-honored tradition that has been passed down for generations.

The Romans expanded the cultivation of olive growing through enhanced irrigation and olive oil extraction techniques. But the unique mild climate, fertile soil and abundant sunshine have always put nature’s blessing on the region and its prized crop.

Objects and utensils collected and cataloged by archeologists and ethnographers, attest to the importance of olive oil in the everyday life and art living of peoples throughout the history of Tunisia. From ancient times olive oil was used for many purposes besides an important dietary staple. Athletes used olive oil to massage muscles and make them suppler, women used it to keep their skin looking young, and with addition of wine and spices, it was used as a cosmetic.

Every bottle of 100% Tunisian olive oil comes brimming with centuries of tradition, knowledge, and the finest olive oil money can buy.
